Wikipedia link and skill description synchronization
The description text you supply for a skill becomes the initial text of the skill description available in smartPeople. You can add a description for any skill manually or from Wikipedia.
To add a skill description from Wikipedia, follow the steps listed below:
- In a skill library you have created, point to the skill record for which you want to add a description, click the three dots icon within that record, and then click Manage details.
- On the Information tab of the pane that opens, enter a link from Wikipedia to the Wikipedia link text box and then click the confirm button.
As a result, the Wikipedia link as well as a description is added to the skill details in all available languages.
If a skill already has a description, you are prompted to update it with the one from Wikipedia. Accept the prompt to overwrite the description by clicking Yes in the message box that appears.
As a result, the description is added, and it is automatically synchronized with Wikipedia.
If you do not accept the prompt and click No in the message box that appears, the description is not synchronized with the one from Wikipedia. To synchronize the description manually, click Sync description. As a result, the description is synchronized and shown in the Description field.
The description is synchronized for all the languages in which the Wikipedia page has been published. If there is no language edition for the Wikipedia page, the description field for that language is left blank.
Once a description is synchronized with the one from Wikipedia, you cannot edit it.
You can, however, delete the Wikipedia link by clicking a little cross in the Wikipedia link text box. Once done, the Description field becomes editable, so you can edit or remove the description synchronized with Wikipedia.
After adding the Wikipedia link, you also have the possibility to synchronize the keywords with the ones from Wikipedia. To this end, click Sync keywords. As a result, keywords from Wikipedia are added to the list of available keywords, if any, in all languages which edition the Wikipedia page has. The keywords from Wikipedia have the W letter mark.
Wikipedia links for skill import and skill description synchronization
Supplying description for all skills from Wikipedia at a time may be very helpful and can make your work even more effective and productive. To this end, use the process of importing skills to your skill library in batches.
Before importing skills to your library, first, you need to create the XLSX document and then upload it to smartLibrary. This XLSX document has a set of fields to be correctly filled in with relevant data. Among those fields, find the LINK TO WIKIPEDIA field and add a corresponding link for each skill you want to import.
Once skills are imported, their descriptions are automatically synchronized with Wikipedia.
Synchronization settings
To synchronize descriptions and keywords for skills in your skill library with Wikipedia, follow the steps listed below:
- On the command bar, click Library settings, and then click Wikipedia sync.
- In the Synchronization settings pane that appears, click Synchronize now.
- Click Save.
Here you can also set an automated Wikipedia synchronization. To this end, turn on the Automated Wikipedia synchronization toggle.
